20 Years to Marinate
This project began a little more than twenty years ago, when a friend wrote a script called The Genesis Project. It followed a group of college students who chose a reckless class assignment: catch and study a serial killer. The plan goes off the rails, as you might expect, and takes many detours to a surprising end.
Early on I helped get the script to people who could move it forward. More than two decades later, my friend and one of the producers secured funding, and we shot the movie in February.
My schedule was packed, so I could not be as involved as I hoped, but I did shoot the gallery, the behind the scenes, and the unit stills.
Saying I missed film production is an understatement. I felt alive again. Making a movie is where my heart lives. I love the lighting, the blocking of a scene, the set decoration and design. Every part of the process fascinates me. For a handful of days in February, I stepped out of my regular job and back into production, and I could fold my love of photography into it. It was great.
This series of images falls into three kinds, with examples of each. First are the behind the scenes, which show how the work gets done. Next are the unit stills. These are photographs that match what the main camera sees. Many promotional images that look like frames from the film are often made by the unit stills photographer. The final kind is the gallery shots, often used for posters and direct promotion.
The break from my normal life was fantastic. The crew was stellar and the work pure joy. When will I do it again? I do not know. I hope soon. Maybe not. I still hope it happens.
The film should be out before long, though the release date is not set as of this post.
Thanks for stopping by.
